2009 SAT Playwrights PlayFest

Guidelines

Theme and Title

The theme and title for the 2009 SAT Playwrights'PlayFest is "New Orleans Beat " Each play script submitted must include, portray or follow a story line related to a New Orleans theme. The setting can be from any time period.

Content is open, yet we are looking for the creative use of words and writing style.

The script must include three of the five elements listed below:

      1. The theme, idea, or phrase "second chances."

      2. The setting is on the day or night of Fat Tuesday.

      3. A character is not what they seem.

      4. A piece of music that means something to one of the characters.

      5. A map.

The submission deadline (postmarked) for scripts is September 8th, 2008.

Format

  • The script must be no more than 10-11 pages long (in standard manuscript format of 12 pt. font, Times Roman, New Courier or Courier.)

  • Title page should include the play title, your name, address, phone number and email address.

  • Set description, time and place, and complete character list with very brief descriptions (include gender and age) should appear on the next page before beginning the text.

  • The script format: Character name centered or on a tab slightly left of center. Dialogue below that, single spaced, off set about 3" from left margin and 1" from the right. Double-spaced between characters and/or stage directions. Stage directions are in line with a character name, about halfway across the page and 1" from right-hand margin.
  • Staple the pages together, please do not send scripts in folders or binders.
  • Manuscripts submitted must have all rights secured and be an original script by the writer.


Production

All scripts should require simple production values. Our stage is an intimate space so bear that in mind when making your submission.

  • 1-4 actors
  • Minimal props
  • Maximum of 3 lighting cues (includes lights up & lights down)
  • Maximum of 3 sound cues
  • Set of 1 table & 4 chairs
  • Playwright must be open and willing to work on possible re-writes and/or cuts.
  • If your play is chosen and runs longer than 10 minutes, the playwright MUST make revisions. No exceptions.


Eligibility

The PlayFest is open to any interested South Texas script writer who wishes to become a member of the SAT Playwrights at the yearly membership fee of $25. Yes, I know a fee, but it helps us defer the costs of the PlayFest and you get lots of Membership benefits.

If there are too few producible scripts the festival will be postponed for one year.
